This session provides instructional strategies that match the unique learning style and neurology of autistic people\, promotes generalization across environments\, and supports independence. \nIn addition\, attendees will be introduced to a framework\, the Comprehensive Autism Planning System (CAPS) that can be easily used to ensure that (a) necessary skills are taught and (b) supports are provided in a meaningful way when they are needed. CAPS\, which is designed to be used at home\, school\, postsecondary education\, and on the job\, makes it possible for parents\, all professionals working with the individual and the individual\, themselves\, to understand what skills and supports are needed for success. \nThis workshop is geared towards individuals with ASD\, parents\, and professionals. \n\nBrenda Smith Myles Ph.D.\, formerly a professor at the University of Kansas\, is the recipient of several awards\, including the Autism Society of America’s Outstanding Professional Award\, the Princeton Fellowship Award\, and the The Global and Regional Asperger Syndrome (GRASP) Divine Neurotypical Award\, and American Academy of Pediatrics Autism Champion. She has made over 3000 presentations all over the world and written more than 300 articles and books on ASD. Further\, in the latest survey conducted by the University of Texas\, she was acknowledged as the second most productive applied researcher in ASD in the world. \n\nAt the conclusion of this workshop\, participants will be able to: \n\n1. DESCRIPTION:The Autism Society Western New York and Autism Services\, Inc. will host Dr. Cathy Pratt\, BCBA-D as she presents “Supporting Students with Co-Occurring Mental Health and ASD”\, a virtual workshop\, on Saturday\, April 22\, 2023 from 8:30 a.m. – 12:45 p.m. \nABOUT THE WORKSHOP \nIndividuals on the autism spectrum are at an increased risk of co-occurring mental health conditions and even suicide. Both parents and teachers can play a role in supporting these children and adolescents. This curriculum contains items that impact social interactions\, school performance\, and sometimes health and well-being. The curriculum also includes unspoken rules\, slang\, metaphors\, body language\, etc. While this information may be intuitive for neurotypical individuals\, it is not for those with autism or other special needs. \nThis session shows how the autistic brain – which is different not less\, consistent with precepts of neurodiversity – processes the hidden curriculum. The speaker provides practical tips to these hidden social needs to children and to adults and stresses the importance of making these a part of everyday life. When teaching the hidden curriculum\, it is essential that we respect how the individual thinks and learns. DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, April 23\, 2022\, Autism Services\, Inc. and the Autism Society Western New York are pleased to present our virtual workshop\, “Building a Toolkit to Support Executive Functioning Skills\,” presented by Amy Moore-Gaffney\, M.A./CCC-SLP.  Ms. Gaffney is an education consultant\, speech-language pathologist\, and TEACCH Certified Advanced Consultant at the Indiana Resource Center for Autism located at the Indiana Institute on Disability and Community\, Indiana University Bloomington. \nExecutive functioning skills help us make plans\, follow through\, and achieve our goals\, while being able to make necessary adjustments along the way.  When a person is struggling to develop this set of skills\, multiple areas\, including academics\, emotional regulation\, and participating in daily living activities can be impacted.   The use of evidence-based strategies can assist with the development of skills during childhood and then become life-long strategies that a person uses to have independence and success as an adult.  This workshop will provide information about specific executive functioning abilities and provide strategies for parents/caregivers\, teachers\, and therapists to build their toolkit to provide support to those struggling with executive functioning skills.  This workshop is geared towards both parents and professionals. \nIn addition\, we are pleased to announce that we will be offering ASHA CEU credit through the Speech-Language-Hearing Association of Western New York (SHAWNY)\, and New York State Education Department Occupational Therapy and Physical Therapy State Board Approved Continuing Competency Hours for OTs/COTAs/PTs/PTAs through Associated Physical and Occupational Therapists\, PLLC (APOT)! Paula is now the director of Aquilla Occupational Therapy; a family-oriented practice that works with both children and adults with ASD. Paula is proud to serve her community in Toronto\, and is passionate about collaborating with First Nations Communities across Canada. Paula has taught workshops about sensory processing and development in many countries and has been a guest lecturer for the University of Toronto\, McMaster University\, and Humber College. \nPaula is published in the field of as a co-author of Building Bridges through Sensory Integration (1998)\, and The Sensory Detective (2016)\, and is a contributor to the book Children\, Youth\, and Adults with Asperger’s Syndrome. Paula has also contributed to magazines and special interest newsletters in Canada\, the US\, and UK. She is the technical editor for the SI Focus Magazine. Paula brings warmth and enthusiasm in her work with children and adults on the spectrum and their families. \nWhen we view those with ASD from a sensory perspective\, it helps us to understand potential underlying reasons for challenging behavior. Using this “sensory lens” you can understand how to better support function and regulation in those with ASD. Learn how the environment\, our relationships and our activities support regulation during stressful times. This presentation will address sensory strategies which contribute to a calm\, organized\, nervous system that can actually thrive in today’s world. \nWorkshop will focus on: \n\nWhat is sensory processing?\nWhat is a sensory lens?\nHow does stress affect our nervous system?\nWhat does the research say about the effects of stress?\nHow your environment\, relationships\, and activities can support the nervous system during stress?\nHow can you teach those with ASD to assess and self-regulate their own sensory status?\nHow to develop self-care skills in individuals with ASD and in the parents and professionals who support them?\n\nThis workshop will include ample time for discussion and questions. \nIt is applicable to caregivers of individuals of all ages\, individuals with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD)\, SLPs\, OTs/COTAs\, PTs/PTAs teachers\, administrators\, mental health professionals\, and any other professionals/paraprofessionals working with those with ASD. \nCost and CEU credit information \nParent/Individual with ASD is $10 per person \nSpeech-Language Pathologists/Audiologists is $30 per person\, .35 ASHA CEUs \nOTs & COTAs is $30 per person\, 3.0 NYS Continuing Competency Hour for OTs/OTAs. DESCRIPTION:Dr. Michael Cummings MD.  will give an overview of mental health issues that co-occur with ASD.   He will discuss ADHD\, anxiety\, depression\, schizophrenia\, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD)\, oppositional defiant disorder (ODD)  \, bipolar  and other mood disorders.    Dr. Cummings will also explore the role of commonly used psychiatric medications\, as well as their risks and benefits to the individual.   Workshop will discuss how to interface with mental health providers to maximize treatment outcomes.    Dr. Cummings will also discuss the APIC Program which provides medical and social resources to families in crisis at no charge    APIC links families and the individual in need with pivotal services including  medical and  alternative behavioral health therapies to help avoid hospitalization.    They also provide breaks for caregivers and work on improving the home environment. \nDr. Cummings is Medical Director and co-founder of APIC (Access to Psychiatry Through Intermediate Care)\, Associate Medical Director ECMC and Vice Chair of Department  of Psychiatry.
