DESCRIPTION:Tune in to hear Jennifer Frankovich\, MD\, discuss the co-occurrence of systemic inflammatory and autoimmune diseases including the overlap between pediatric acute-onset neuropsychiatric syndrome (PANS) and autism. \nAbout the Speaker \nJennifer Frankovich\, MD\, is an Associate Clinical Professor in the Department of Pediatrics\, Division of Allergy\, Immunology Rheumatology (AIR) at Stanford University/Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital (LPCH).  Her clinical expertise is in systemic inflammatory and autoimmune diseases that co-occur with psychiatric symptoms.  She completed her training in pediatrics\, pediatric rheumatology\, and clinical epidemiology at Stanford University/LPCH.  She directs the Stanford PANS Program (2012- present) where she and her collaborators have created a longitudinal clinical database and large biorepository of patient and control biospecimens.  In addition to generating clinical data to better understand the PANS illness\, she is collaborating with ten basic science labs who aim to understand the immunological underpinnings of the illness. \n\nFree certificates of participation are available upon successful completion of a brief knowledge quiz after the webinar. The quiz will be added to this page once the event has concluded.  \n\n\nAbout the speaker:\n\n\n\nDr. Van de Water joined the faculty in the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of California\, Davis in 1999. In 2000\, she also joined the faculty of the newly formed UC Davis M.I.N.D. Institute when she began her research on the immunobiology of autism. Dr. Van de Water’s laboratory pursues research programs pertaining to autoimmune and clinical immune-based disorders including the biological aspects of autism spectrum disorders. The application of Dr. Van de Water’s immunopathology background has been instrumental in the dissection of the immune anomalies noted in some individuals with autism\, and in the differentiation of various autism behavioral phenotypes at a biological level. Most notable of these is the investigation of the maternal immune system as it relates to autism spectrum disorders\, with particular emphasis on the presence of highly specific maternal autoantibodies to fetal brain proteins. Dr. Van de Water’s seminal work in this area has led to a highly specific biomarker of autism risk as well as three patents leading to the commercialization of this technology. DESCRIPTION:Tune in to learn about research exploring the role enteric neurotransmitters\, specifically serotonin and oxytocin\, play in enteric nervous system (ENS) development and how\, when signaling of either of these neurotransmitters is abnormal\, it can result in intestinal inflammation and/or motility dysfunction. \nAbout the speaker:\nKara Gross Margolis\, MD is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics and a pediatric gastroenterologist with a clinical expertise in brain-gut axis disorders\, and particularly autism spectrum disorders (ASD). She has published highly novel observations on the roles that enteric neurotransmitters\, specifically serotonin and oxytocin\, play in enteric nervous system (ENS) development and how\, when signaling of either of these neurotransmitters is abnormal\, result in intestinal inflammation and/or motility dysfunction.  She has more recently leveraged her expertise to study disorders of the brain-gut axis from the perspective of the ENS.  Her studies in this area thus far have focused on two disorders that have been classically thought of as central nervous system (CNS)-centric\, ASD and developmental antidepressant (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor; SSRI) exposure.  Her overall goals are to pursue translational research that interrogates basic mechanisms underlying important clinical conditions\, in order to utilize this knowledge to develop novel therapeutic strategies. \nREGISTER:  https://www.autism.org/gastrointestinal-autism-research/

DESCRIPTION:Learn about the autonomic nervous system’s role in anxiety and autism. \nRegister:  https://www.autism.org/how-the-autonomic-nervous-system-may-govern-anxiety-in-autism/ \nAbout the Speakers \nDr. Manuel Casanova\, made his residency training in neurology and then spent three years doing a fellowship in neuropathology at The Johns Hopkins Hospital.  This kindled his interest in developmental disorders of the brain.  Dr. Casanova spent eight years helping to establish the Johns Hopkins Brain Resource Center and the Brain Bank Unit of the Clinical Brains Disorders Branch at the National Institutes of Mental Health.  During his time at NIMH\, Dr. Casanova was trained in psychiatry later joining the Medical College of Georgia as a full Professor in 1991 and then the University of Louisville in 2003 as the Kolb Endowed Chair in Psychiatry.  Last June\, he accepted a position as SMART State Endowed Chair in Childhood Translational Neurotherapeutics at the University of South Carolina Greenville Health System\, where he is speaking to us today.  His work includes studies that have looked for the presence of abnormalities of organization and lateralization in the brains of patients who exhibit language disturbances\, including autism\, Asperger’s syndrome\, and dyslexia. \nDr. Emily Casanova earned her doctorate in Anatomy Science & Neurobiology from the University of Louisville’s Medical School.  She is currently a Research Assistant Professor at the University of South Carolina’s School of Medicine at Greenville\, working in close conjunction with Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics in the Department of Pediatrics at Prisma Health.  She has a research background in neurobiology\, developmental biology\, some genetics\, dermatology\, and neuropathology\, with particular focus on neurodevelopmental conditions such as autism and connective tissue disorders like Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS)/Hypermobility Spectrum Disorders (HSD).  Her current research foci/topics of interest include 1) functional classification of high-risk autism genes; 2) the characterization of genomic features common to autism risk genes and those genes’ roles in the evolution of animal morphology\, and 3) etiological overlap between autism and EDS/HSD.  In addition to her research interests in EDS/HSD\, she is also a zebra herself and is passionate about patient advocacy.  She blogs at Science Over a Cuppa.

Additional honors include AAMR Region 10’s Annual Humanitarian Award in 1994 and the Vermont State Director of Mental Retardation Services Program of the Year Award in 1992.

DESCRIPTION:Tune in to hear Roseann Schaaf\, Ph.D.\, professor chair in the Department of Occupational Therapy at Thomas Jefferson University\, share evidence-based sensory integration strategies for supporting individuals with autism. \nRegister:  https://www.autism.org/evidence-based-sensory/ \nAbout the Speaker: \nRoseann Schaaf\, Ph.D.\, is professor and chair in the Department of Occupational Therapy at Thomas Jefferson University\, Jefferson College of Health Professions and Faculty at the Farber Institute for Neuroscience at Jefferson.  Dr. Schaaf is a translational scientist who has devoted her career to the study of children with autism and other developmental disorders\, in particular how processing and integrating sensory information impacts participation in daily occupations.  Building on her training as a behavioral neuroscientist\, Dr. Schaaf’s psychophysiological laboratory was funded by NIH and provided insight into the neurological mechanisms of sensory difficulties in children with autism.\n\nShe has received over 35 funded grants totaling $8 million dollars including a recent $4.1 million dollar grant from the NIH to conduct a comparative effectiveness study of occupational therapy using sensory integration.  This grant is in collaboration with her colleagues at Einstein Medical College and Queens University and includes a multisensory integration biomarker as an objective outcome measure of neuroplasticity.  Roseann has over 70 peer-reviewed journal articles and abstracts\, is the author of five books and 13 book chapters and has presented over 150 papers and presentations spanning national and international venues.  She is a 2008 recipient of the A. Jean Ayres Research Award and a 1996 recipient of the Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching.  Dr. Schaaf became an associate editor of OTJR: Occupation\, Participation and Health in 2017.
