SUMMARY:How the Autonomic Nervous System May Govern Anxiety in Autism - Free Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Learn about the autonomic nervous system’s role in anxiety and autism. \nRegister:  https://www.autism.org/how-the-autonomic-nervous-system-may-govern-anxiety-in-autism/ \nAbout the Speakers \nDr. Manuel Casanova\, made his residency training in neurology and then spent three years doing a fellowship in neuropathology at The Johns Hopkins Hospital.  This kindled his interest in developmental disorders of the brain.  Dr. Casanova spent eight years helping to establish the Johns Hopkins Brain Resource Center and the Brain Bank Unit of the Clinical Brains Disorders Branch at the National Institutes of Mental Health.  During his time at NIMH\, Dr. Casanova was trained in psychiatry later joining the Medical College of Georgia as a full Professor in 1991 and then the University of Louisville in 2003 as the Kolb Endowed Chair in Psychiatry.  Last June\, he accepted a position as SMART State Endowed Chair in Childhood Translational Neurotherapeutics at the University of South Carolina Greenville Health System\, where he is speaking to us today.  His work includes studies that have looked for the presence of abnormalities of organization and lateralization in the brains of patients who exhibit language disturbances\, including autism\, Asperger’s syndrome\, and dyslexia. \nDr. Emily Casanova earned her doctorate in Anatomy Science & Neurobiology from the University of Louisville’s Medical School.  She is currently a Research Assistant Professor at the University of South Carolina’s School of Medicine at Greenville\, working in close conjunction with Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics in the Department of Pediatrics at Prisma Health.  She has a research background in neurobiology\, developmental biology\, some genetics\, dermatology\, and neuropathology\, with particular focus on neurodevelopmental conditions such as autism and connective tissue disorders like Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS)/Hypermobility Spectrum Disorders (HSD).  Her current research foci/topics of interest include 1) functional classification of high-risk autism genes; 2) the characterization of genomic features common to autism risk genes and those genes’ roles in the evolution of animal morphology\, and 3) etiological overlap between autism and EDS/HSD.  In addition to her research interests in EDS/HSD\, she is also a zebra herself and is passionate about patient advocacy.  She blogs at Science Over a Cuppa.

She is a graduate of the University of Toronto\, and has practiced in a variety of clinical\, home\, and community settings since 1986. \nPaula founded the Yes I Can! Nursery School and summer camps\, and the I Love My Baby Program in Toronto. She was also the founding executive director of Giant Steps. Paula is now the director of Aquilla Occupational Therapy; a family-oriented practice that works with both children and adults with ASD. Paula is proud to serve her community in Toronto\, and is passionate about collaborating with First Nations Communities across Canada. Paula has taught workshops about sensory processing and development in many countries and has been a guest lecturer for the University of Toronto\, McMaster University\, and Humber College. \nPaula is published in the field of as a co-author of Building Bridges through Sensory Integration (1998)\, and The Sensory Detective (2016)\, and is a contributor to the book Children\, Youth\, and Adults with Asperger’s Syndrome. Paula has also contributed to magazines and special interest newsletters in Canada\, the US\, and UK. She is the technical editor for the SI Focus Magazine. Paula brings warmth and enthusiasm in her work with children and adults on the spectrum and their families. \nWhen we view those with ASD from a sensory perspective\, it helps us to understand potential underlying reasons for challenging behavior. Using this “sensory lens” you can understand how to better support function and regulation in those with ASD. Learn how the environment\, our relationships and our activities support regulation during stressful times. This presentation will address sensory strategies which contribute to a calm\, organized\, nervous system that can actually thrive in today’s world. \nWorkshop will focus on: \n\nWhat is sensory processing?\nWhat is a sensory lens?\nHow does stress affect our nervous system?\nWhat does the research say about the effects of stress?\nHow your environment\, relationships\, and activities can support the nervous system during stress?\nHow can you teach those with ASD to assess and self-regulate their own sensory status?\nHow to develop self-care skills in individuals with ASD and in the parents and professionals who support them?\n\nThis workshop will include ample time for discussion and questions. \nIt is applicable to caregivers of individuals of all ages\, individuals with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD)\, SLPs\, OTs/COTAs\, PTs/PTAs teachers\, administrators\, mental health professionals\, and any other professionals/paraprofessionals working with those with ASD. \nCost and CEU credit information \nParent/Individual with ASD is $10 per person \nSpeech-Language Pathologists/Audiologists is $30 per person\, .35 ASHA CEUs \nOTs & COTAs is $30 per person\, 3.0 NYS Continuing Competency Hour for OTs/OTAs. DESCRIPTION:Please join James Traylor to review the different types of government benefits and services that can support someone living independently in the community.  James will also talk about the rules\, best practices and potential pitfalls for individuals with disabilities and their families. \nAbout the Presenter: James Traylor has spent his entire professional career building a practice dedicated to the special needs community.  As a sibling and advocate for his little sister with special needs\, James has a unique understanding of the struggles families face in planning.
