SUMMARY:Live Webinar on November 10: A Parent’s Guide to Problem-Solving School Behavior Struggles
DESCRIPTION:You get a phone call from the school that your child is having behavior issues in the classroom. Now what? Interfering school behavior problems create academic\, social\, and emotional gaps in a learner’s progress. If left unaddressed\, behavior struggles can lead to social isolation\, a loss of instructional time\, decreased self-esteem and academic under-achievement. \nHowever\, parents and educators should know that positive behavior change is possible through proactive collaboration\, planning\, and monitoring. This webinar will walk parents through steps to take from the very first phone call about their child’s behaviors to the implementation of individualized strategies. Rather than rush to find a solution or rely on others to solve the problem\, parents can take the lead in gathering information\, developing strategies\, and leading the school team toward more effective action. \nIn this webinar\, you will learn to: \n\nCommunicate and collaborate with the school\nStructure questions to gain relevant information from the school team\nIdentify and describe four areas to consider for interventions\nStructure and monitor a behavior action plan\nIdentify the need for further assessment and formalized plans (and how to get those in place)\nGain comfort and confidence in leading your child’s behavior program\n\nNot available November 10? Don’t worry. Register now and we’ll send you the replay link to watch at your convenience. \nMeet the Expert Speaker:\nRachel Schwartz\, Ph.D.\, BCBA-D\, has worked internationally creating and supervising programs for individuals with disabilities. Her work as a consultant and trainer includes teaching behavior analytic strategies and exploring issues related to sexual education and quality of life. Dr. Schwartz has published original research on these topics in special education journals as well as presented at national\, state\, and local conferences. Through her organization\, Behavior Goals\, Dr. Schwartz taps into more than 15 years of experience working in special education to empower students\, families\, and professionals. \nHave a question for our expert? There will be an opportunity to post questions for the presenter during the live webinar. \nClick here to REGISTER

SUMMARY:The Center for Autism and Related Disabilities (CARD Albany) Live Stream Seminars
DESCRIPTION:The Center for Autism and Related Disabilities (CARD Albany) is offering three live stream seminars that are directed towards school professionals\, community professionals\, and parents\, who live or work with individuals on the autism spectrum. These sessions will not be recorded. These seminars AT NO COST to participants living in New York State through a grant from the New York State Education Department. Registration is required to attend. Choose the sessions you would like to attend when you fill out your registration entry. \nSeminar One – 9:00am-10:15am \nHidden in Plain Sight:  Unmasking Anxiety in ASD\nAlthough anxiety is not considered a core feature of ASD\, approximately 40% of young people with ASD have clinically elevated levels of anxiety.  It is particularly important to recognize and treat anxiety in ASD since it has a great impact on the course and the core aspects of the disorder\, exacerbating social withdrawal as well as repetitive behaviors (Hollander\, 2018).  This training will look at how anxiety can manifest in individuals with ASD and how to treat these symptoms through a cognitive behavioral approach. \nSeminar Two – 11:00am-12:15pm\nReturning to the Classroom: Implementing Structure to Support Students with ASD\nAs many schools make plans to shift from distance learning to in-person instruction\, families\, students and educators face an adjustment period. That’s especially true for students with autism spectrum disorder\, because transitions can be particularly stressful and challenging for them.  Establishing a new school routine is also really important. Setting a schedule and daily expectations is key to helping kids feel safe and secure at school. Students must be comfortable in order to re-engage and connect\, and that will enable them to be ready to learn (Schetter\, 2021). This training will examine ways in which teachers and other school personnel can establish structure within the classroom and throughout the day to support students with ASD as they return to in-person learning. \nSeminar Three – 1:00pm-2:15pm\nUnderstanding and Reducing Challenging Behaviors through Functional Communication Training\nParticipants will be introduced to ways in which they can better understand challenging behaviors and effective strategies to teach more appropriate skills. They will be guided through an evidence-based procedure called Functional Communication Training (FCT) that has been used successfully to reduce challenging behavior in individuals with autism spectrum disorder. \nThe live stream seminars (three seminars per date) are available on the following dates:\nWednesday\, November 10\, 2021\nWednesday\, November 17\, 2021\nWednesday\, December 15\, 2021 \nContinuing Education Credits\nCARD Albany is an approved provider for the following continuing education credits:\nSchool Psychologists (NASP)\nSocial Workers (LMSW & LCSW)\nContinuing Teacher and Leader Education (CTLE)\nLicensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) \nGeneral certificates of attendance will be provided for all participants. \nEach session is eligible for 1.25 contact hours. There is a $5.00 processing fee per session for each CEU selected. Please visit our website for more information about CEU offerings. SUMMARY:Region 1 Self-Direction Information Session
DESCRIPTION:“Everyone has their own likes and dislikes\, hobbies and favorite activities.  Having a choice is what Self-Direction is all about.  You will get to pick your own activities\, staff and schedule when you self-direct. \n“Self-Direction may be right for you if you can make your own decisions (or have someone to help you do so) and if you want more responsibility\, flexible supports and services.  Anyone who is eligible for OPWDD services and enrolled in the Home and Community Based Services (HCBS) Waiver can choose to self-direct their services. \n“Although the process may seem complicated at first\, you will get help at every step.  First\, you can attend a Self-Direction information session at a nearby Developmental Disabilities Regional Office (DDRO).  You will meet with a team of people whom you choose\, (your Circle of Support) and they will help you select your services and put together a budget.  Your Circle of Support can include family and close friends\, your Care Manager\, a Support Broker and staff who know you well.  You will talk about what you want from life and make it a reality. \n“Self-Direction is flexible.  You can change things in your plan when you want something different.  You can always switch back to a more traditional model of supports if Self-Direction doesn’t suit you.” \n(The above description was taken from http://opwdd.ny.gov/types-services/self-direction.) \nNOTE:  At this time\, meetings are conducted virtually. \nAttendance is taken using the email address logging in for the session. People cannot receive credit just by calling in.\n**People who are unable to access a WebEx session should contact their SD Liaison for a phone session. \nRegistration is required.  Register through WebEx link:  https://meetny.webex.com/meetny/onstage/g.php?MTID=e7fdd90b5647027617dd6de85ea02b06a
