SUMMARY:Region 1 Self-Direction Information Session via WebEx
DESCRIPTION:“Everyone has their own likes and dislikes\, hobbies and favorite activities.  Having a choice is what Self-Direction is all about.  You will get to pick your own activities\, staff and schedule when you self-direct. \n“Self-Direction may be right for you if you can make your own decisions (or have someone to help you do so) and if you want more responsibility\, flexible supports and services.  Anyone who is eligible for OPWDD services and enrolled in the Home and Community Based Services (HCBS) Waiver can choose to self-direct their services. \n“Although the process may seem complicated at first\, you will get help at every step.  First\, you can attend a Self-Direction information session at a nearby Developmental Disabilities Regional Office (DDRO).  You will meet with a team of people whom you choose\, (your Circle of Support) and they will help you select your services and put together a budget.  Your Circle of Support can include family and close friends\, your Care Manager\, a Support Broker and staff who know you well.  You will talk about what you want from life and make it a reality. \n“Self-Direction is flexible.  You can change things in your plan when you want something different.  You can always switch back to a more traditional model of supports if Self-Direction doesn’t suit you.” \n(The above description was taken from http://opwdd.ny.gov/types-services/self-direction.) \nNOTE:  At this time\, meetings are conducted virtually. \nAttendance is taken using the email address logging in for the session. People cannot receive credit just by calling in.\n**People who are unable to access a WebEx session should contact their SD Liaison for a phone session. \nRegistration is required.  Register through WebEx link:  https://meetny.webex.com/meetny/onstage/g.php?MTID=e8a92c99380873aab321e91f42f14848d

SUMMARY:Live Webinar on January 10: Focus on Inattentive ADHD: The Under-Diagnosed and Under-Treated Subtype
DESCRIPTION:ADHD’s three distinct subtypes were first recognized in the 1994 update to the DSM (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual)\, however confusion over the subtypes’ differences persists even today. This appears particularly true of the “Predominantly Inattentive” (PI) subtype\, which is characterized by symptoms of distractibility\, failure to complete work\, forgetfulness\, and disorganization. People with the predominantly inattentive ADHD — many of them women diagnosed later in life — experience the same problems paying attention that are typical of ADHD\, but they face fewer of the difficulties related to impulse control seen in the Combined subtype. \nBecause inattentive children exhibit fewer behavior-management problems\, PI is not always recognized and diagnosed in childhood\, and this under-recognition can persist into adulthood. This is particularly true for girls with ADHD\, who are more likely than boys to have the PI subtype. Research and clinical experience show clearly\, however\, that difficulties with attention — even when not accompanied by impulsivity or hyperactivity — can lead to significant functional impairment and distress in higher education\, the workplace\, and in social \ninteractions. When PI is diagnosed and treated early\, individuals can work to manage symptoms and take better control of the condition. \nIn this webinar\, you will learn about: \nThe prevalence of predominantly inattentive ADHD in children and adults\nThe most common symptoms and distinctive features of inattentive ADHD\nHow predominantly inattentive ADHD is recognized and diagnosed\nThe daily-life difficulties of people with PI\nEffective treatments for predominantly inattentive ADHD \nNot available January 10? Don’t worry. Register now and we’ll send you the replay link to watch at your convenience. \nHave a question for our expert? There will be an opportunity to post questions for the presenter during the live webinar. \nMeet the Expert Speaker:\nDr. Mary Solanto is professor of pediatrics and psychiatry at the Hofstra/Northwell School of Medicine (Long Island\, N.Y.). Prior to joining Hofstra\, she was Director of the ADHD Center at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine and Associate Professor of Psychiatry at NYU. In 2017-2018\, Dr. Solanto was a Fulbright U.S. Scholar in the Netherlands\, where she conducted research on treatment of ADHD in college students. Dr. Solanto’s research on the cognitive and behavioral functioning of children and adults with ADHD\, the effects of psychostimulants\, and the characteristics of subtypes of ADHD has been supported by grants from NIMH\, NICHD\, and NINDS. She developed a novel cognitive-behavioral intervention for adults with ADHD\, which was the focus of an NIMH-sponsored efficacy study (American Journal of Psychiatry\, 2010). The manual for therapists\, Cognitive-Behavioral Treatment of Adult ADHD: Targeting Executive Dysfunction was published by Guilford Press (2011). The program was recognized as the Innovative Program of the Year by CHADD (2011). Dr. Solanto has served on study section/grant review panels for NIMH. Currently\, she is a member of the editorial boards of the Journal of Attention Disorders\, and the ADHD Report (Guilford Press)\, and serves on the professional advisory boards of CHADD and APSARD. \nClick here to register.

SUMMARY:Live Webinar on January 19: Perfectionism and ADHD: Making ‘Good Enough’ Work for You
DESCRIPTION:Do you set unrealistic goals and worry about disappointing others? Are your personal expectations based on “shoulds” instead of your known strengths and interests? Does this result in shame and low self-esteem? \nThese behaviors point to a cycle of perfectionism\, an unhealthy insistence on personal flawlessness that increases anxiety and holds you back from the natural process of learning that’s part of daily living. Perfectionism is common among teens and adults with ADHD who struggle with wanting something to be right so much that it becomes difficult to start (and complete) tasks\, assignments\, and projects. Though perfectionism can be motivating\, it can also keep you overfocused on the end result and not the process of getting there. \nIn this webinar\, Dr. Sharon Saline will explain how to stop setting unreasonable standards\, engaging in negative comparisons to others\, and criticizing yourself for living with ADHD. You will learn how to understand and manage the root causes of perfectionism\, examine the role of imposter syndrome\, decrease negative self-talk\, and increase your capacity for personal compassion. You will understand how to improve executive functioning skills related to procrastination and productivity\, stop reflexive shame\, and create techniques for managing stress. With these resources\, you’ll begin to nurture the essential resilience of a growth mindset and accept yourself as you truly are — perfectly imperfect. \nIn this free\, hour-long webinar you will learn how to: \n\nUnderstand the relationship between anxiety\, perfectionism\, and ADHD\nImprove executive functioning skills related to procrastination and productivity\nSet realistic expectations based on previous successful experiences\nDevelop techniques for addressing imposter syndrome\, fear of failure\, and shame\nIncrease the capacity for mindful self-compassion and self-acceptance\n\nHave a question for our expert? There will be an opportunity to post questions for the presenter during the live webinar. \nNot available January 19? Don’t worry. Register now and we’ll send you the replay link to watch at your convenience. \nClick here to register. \nMeet the Expert Speaker: \nSharon Saline\, Psy.D.\, is a licensed clinical psychologist in private practice working primarily with children\, adolescents and families for the diagnosis\, treatment\, and intervention of ADHD\, learning disabilities\, and mental health issues. She is the author of What Your ADHD Child Wishes You Knew: Working Together to Empower Kids for Success in School and Life. Dr. Saline has extensive experience consulting with schools throughout Western Massachusetts on mental health issues in the classroom\, interpreting psychological evaluations and improving teacher/parent communication.
