SUMMARY:Transition to Adulthood - Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Tune in to hear Stephen Shore\, Ed.D. share insights about growing up with autism\, navigating school\, and finding his role in education and advocacy. \nAbout the speaker:\nA professor of special education at Adelphi University\, Dr. Shore was diagnosed with autism in early childhood. He recounted how his parents encouraged his strong interests and engaged in helping to teach him communication skills\, both of which ultimately led him to success in school and job opportunities. His love of bicycles and strengths in disassembling and rebuilding things led him to become a bicycle mechanic as an older teen and in college. Later\, his gift for music and also helping others advocate for their educational and employment needs led him to study music and develop curricula that builds on student strengths.\nIn addition to his teaching and advocacy roles\, Dr. Shore is a member of the Autism Speaks board as well as its Medical and Scientific Advisory Committee. \nRegister for Transition to Adulthood:  https://www.autism.org/transition-to-adulthood/

SUMMARY:Self-Direction Information Sessions via WebEx
DESCRIPTION:“Everyone has their own likes and dislikes\, hobbies and favorite activities.  Having a choice is what Self-Direction is all about.  You will get to pick your own activities\, staff and schedule when you self-direct. \n“Self-Direction may be right for you if you can make your own decisions (or have someone to help you do so) and if you want more responsibility\, flexible supports and services.  Anyone who is eligible for OPWDD services and enrolled in the Home and Community Based Services (HCBS) Waiver can choose to self-direct their services. \n“Although the process may seem complicated at first\, you will get help at every step.  First\, you can attend a Self-Direction information session at a nearby Developmental Disabilities Regional Office (DDRO).  You will meet with a team of people whom you choose\, (your Circle of Support) and they will help you select your services and put together a budget.  Your Circle of Support can include family and close friends\, your Care Manager\, a Support Broker and staff who know you well.  You will talk about what you want from life and make it a reality. \n“Self-Direction is flexible.  You can change things in your plan when you want something different.  You can always switch back to a more traditional model of supports if Self-Direction doesn’t suit you.” \n(The above description was taken from http://opwdd.ny.gov/types-services/self-direction.) \nNOTE:  At this time\, meetings are conducted virtually. \nRegistration is required.  Register through WebEx link. \nhttps://meetny.webex.com/meetny/onstage/g.php?MTID=e77b748075765afcc4446d64bd5ee82e6

SUMMARY:FRONT DOOR FAMILY INFORMATION SESSIONS via WebEx
DESCRIPTION:People new to the OPWDD system can access services and supports through the Front Door.  The Front Door is the way OPWDD connects people to the services they need and want.  Once you enter\, a person-centered planning process begins which helps you learn about and access service options taking your needs and desires into consideration.  It will also give you the chance to direct your own service plan or help your family member or loved one as they direct theirs. \nThe Front Door is based on the understanding that people with developmental disabilities have the right to enjoy meaningful relationships\, experience personal growth\, take part in their community and live in the home of their choice.  The Front Door process will guide you through the steps involved in finding out if you are eligible for services with OPWDD\, identify your needs\, goals and preferences\, and help you work on a plan for getting those services. \nFamilies/Individuals are welcome to attend any session that is convenient for them.  Families are only required to attend one session even if there are multiple people in the family to be represented.  Front Door Information sessions will be held via WebEx and pre-registration is REQUIRED. \nTo register for upcoming WebEx Front Door Information sessions for June – August 2020 for Region 1/Western & Finger Lakes (counties of Allegany\, Cattaraugus\, Chautauqua\, Chemung\, Erie\, Genesee\, Livingston\, Niagara\, Monroe\, Ontario\, Orleans\, Schuyler\, Seneca\, Steuben\, Wayne\, Wyoming\, and Yates) contact Jeffrey Roberts at 585-241-5797 or by email at Jeffrey.e.roberts@opwdd.ny.gov. \nDATE           TIME \n6/26/2020     1pm-3pm \n6/29/2020     3pm-5pm \n7/7/2020       10am-12pm \n7/17/2020     5pm-7pm \n7/20/2020     1pm-3pm \n7/29/2020     3pm-5pm \n8/5/2020       10am-12pm \n8/10/2020     5pm-7pm \n8/21/2020     3pm-5pm \n8/25/2020     1pm-3pm
