DESCRIPTION:Regional Center for Autism Spectrum Disorders (RCASD) at SUNY Old Westbury’s FREE Online Autism Conference: Teaching to Successful Outcomes: Supporting Children with Autism in the Home\, School & Community on Friday\, May 5 from 9:00 a.m. – 4:45 p.m. This conference is geared to families\, caregivers\, individuals with autism\, educators\, administrators\, paraprofessionals\, and related service providers.\n\n\n\n\n“You’re Going to Love this Kid!”: Supporting Students with Autism in the Inclusive Classroom \nPresenter: Paula Kluth\, Ph.D.\n9:00 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.\n \nIn this keynote session\, participants will consider how language drives practice and how our understanding of human difference can be either a barrier or a tool in the inclusive classroom. Dr. Kluth will share stories of positive practices in inclusive schools and discuss how rejecting a deficit model and exploiting strengths can benefit both students and their teachers. Three powerful strategies will be shared\, and two teacher-tested tools will be highlighted.\n \nSocial Thinking\, Social Learning and Becoming a Social Detective\nPresenter: Nancy Tarshis MA\, MS CCC-SLP\n10:45 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.\n \nThis talk will focus on understanding the concept of social competence and the impact of social learning differences in the academic sector. We will discuss differentiated teaching and a few key strategies for honoring and supporting neurodiverse students in meeting personal goals at school.\n \nTeaching Emotional Awareness and Regulation Strategies to Children with Autism\nPresenter: Anton Shcherbakov Psy.D.\, BCBA\n12:30 p.m. – 1:45 p.m.\n \nChildren with ASD often experience difficulty identifying emotions in themselves and in others. Prior research has demonstrated that these deficits subsequently produce significant emotional regulation challenges. Difficulties with emotional awareness and regulation not only impact social relationships but can also inhibit the development of independent functioning across a variety of settings. In this workshop\, we will review typical emotional awareness and regulation deficits among children with ASD. We will then discuss how to implement simple interventions that seek to improve emotional awareness and regulation skills.\n \nSupport for Challenges with Feeding and Toileting: From Assessment to Intervention\nPresenter: Bianca Coleman Ph.D.\, NCSP\, BCBA-D\n2:00 p.m. – 3:15 p.m.\n \nMany children diagnosed with Autism experience some degree of difficulty with either feeding or toileting. This discussion aims to provide practical guidelines for evaluating the impact of challenges in these areas as well as identifying the next steps for assessment and treatment.\n \nRest Assured: Solutions for Childhood Sleep Problems\nPresenter: Keira Moore Ph.D.\, BCBA-D\, LBA\n3:30 p.m. – 4:45 p.m.\n \nMore than half of all children experience sleep problems at some point in their lives\, and those numbers are even higher for children on the autism spectrum. Join Dr. Keira Moore\, a Board Certified Behavior Analyst and sleep expert as she shares her top strategies for assessing and treating childhood sleep.\n\n\n\nCertificates of Attendance \n\nA certificate of attendance will be issued to all attendees. Attendance is usually verified within 72 hours of the event and surveys are sent to all attendees. A certificate of attendance is generated automatically upon completion of the surveys. \n \nContinuing Education Information\nCEUs (for BACBs only) and CTLEs are being offered for this conference. Eligibility is verified after review of system generated attendance reports as well as poll data.\n \nContinuing Teacher and Leader Education (CTLEs)\nSUNY Old Westbury is recognized by the New York State Education Department’s Office of Teaching Initiatives as an approved provider of CTLE for Professional Classroom Teachers\, School Leaders and Level III Teaching Assistants. A total of up to 6.5 CTLE hours are available for this conference. The total fee for CTLEs is $10 and is payable at time of registration.\n \nBehavior Analyst Certification Board\nSUNY Old Westbury is recognized as an approved provider of BACB CEUs. The cost is $10 per credit payable at the time of registration. Up to 6 credits are available for this conference.\n \nBACB CEUs are offered for the following sessions:\n• Session 1: You’re Going to Love this Kid!
