SUMMARY:Teaching to Successful Outcomes:  Supporting Children with Autism at Home\, School\, and Community - Virtual
DESCRIPTION:8:30 a.m. – 9:45 a.m.  The 4 A’s of Autism: Awareness\, Acceptance\, Appreciation\, and Action as a Pathway to Leading a Fulfilling and Productive Life presented by Stephen Shore\, Ed.D\, Aldephi University.  An autobiographical structure combining experiences of people on the autism spectrum\, in making fulfilling and productive lives for autistic individuals the rule rather than the exception will be used to charge participants to reframe their thinking away from deficit\, disorder\, and deficit towards seeking abilities based on individual strengths. The session ends with generalizing focus on strengths-based thinking to the rest of humanity – and finally\, to the audience themselves. \n10:15 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.  Help Me Help You! Supporting Teachers and Paraprofessional Teams to Implement Function-Based Challenging Behavior Interventions presented by Mandy Rispoli\, PhD\, BCBA-D\, Purdue University.  The purpose of this session is to share a practice-based coaching model for supporting school personnel and caregivers to assess\, prevent\, and address challenging behavior. Dr. Rispoli will share the latest research for providing effective\, efficient\, and personalized supports to school teams. In particular\, this session will explore the teachers-as-coaches for paraprofessionals to implement function-based behavioral interventions in schools. This active session includes active discussion\, sharing of resources\, and envisioning the future of coaching. \n12:00 p.m. – 1:15 p.m.  Social Skills Success on the Spectrum: Valuable Tips and Lessons to Help Your Child Connect and Communicate presented by Victoria Boone\, The Hamilton Center. \n1:45 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.  Keynote Presentation:  Supporting Siblings of Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder presented by Julie Wolf\, PhD\, Yale School of Medicine.  Siblings of individuals with ASD have a unique lived experience and play an important role in the lives of their siblings. DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, November 6\, 2021 Autism Services\, Inc. and the Autism Society Western New York are pleased to present our virtual workshop\, “Educating Students Across the Lifespan:  Preparation for Life”\,  presented by Dr. Cathy Pratt\, BCBA-D.  Dr. Cathy Pratt is the Director of the Indiana Resource Center for Autism located at the Indiana Institute on Disability and Community\, Indiana University’s Center for Excellence in Disabilities. \nThe ultimate goal of any educational program should be preparation for life after school.  Despite our best efforts\, the unemployment rate for our individuals on the spectrum remains high.  Students who have behavior or mental health challenges have greater risks and outcomes.  This workshop will provide practical and immediately useful information that individuals with ASD\, parents/caregivers\, teachers\, SLPs\, OTs/OTAs\, PTs/PTAs\, mental health professionals\, and administrators can implement today to help create a brighter future. \nIn addition\, this workshop will: \n\nHighlight characteristics associated with ASD and co-occurring mental health issues;\nDescribe strategies involved in assessing and programming for behavior differences;\nDescribe a range of evidence-based strategies (i.e. reinforcement\, video self-modeling\, visual supports\, and prompting and modeling); and\nDescribe accommodations that may assist the individual in post school settings.\n\nIn addition\, we are pleased to announce that we will be offering ASHA CEU credit through the Speech-Language-Hearing Association of Western New York (SHAWNY)\, and New York State Education Department Occupational Therapy and Physical Therapy State Board Approved Continuing Competency Hours for OTs/COTAs/PTs/PTAs through Associated Physical and Occupational Therapists\, PLLC (APOT)!
