SUMMARY:Lessons from the Neurodiverse - Helping Individuals with Autism Help Themselves - sponsored by Autism Society WNY and Autism Services
DESCRIPTION:Presenter:  Dr. Laurence Sugarman\, a research Professor and Director\, Center for Applied Psychophysiology and Self-Regulation (CAPS) at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT). He serves as a behavioral pediatrician at the Easter Seals Diagnostic and Treatment Center and is Clinical Professor in Pediatrics at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. \nThis evidence-based workshop will explore recent discoveries about the autonomic nervous system (ANS) and early brain development that provide compelling clues about why individuals with ASD use repetitive and/or restrictive behaviors as calming and coping mechanisms. During this interactive half-day workshop\, participants will learn to view individuals with ASD through a psycho-biological lens that provides new insight into how to help these individuals help themselves. Compromised autonomic and social engagement nervous systems not only effect communication\, social skills and behaviors\, but heighten the affected individual’s fight-or-flight response. Breathing techniques\, meditative exercises\, autonomic biofeedback\, and even hypnosis can help individuals with ASD self-regulate stress\, emotions\, and behavior. Those who live and work with individuals with ASD can teach and model these skills. When they do\, affected individuals learn to turn down the inner turmoil and respond to life’s challenges with increased focus\, less anxiety and rigidity\, increased social skills\, a better self-concept\, and greater confidence. This workshop is geared for individuals with ASD\, parents\, and professionals. \nIn addition\, we are pleased to announce that we will be offering ASHA CEU credit through the Speech-Language-Hearing Association of Western New York (SHAWNY)\, and IACET as well as AOTA CEUs for OTs/COTAs/PTs/PTAs through Learning Partners! Both SHAWNY and Learning Partners are co-sponsors of this workshop. \nCost: $12 parent/$28 professional/$38 SLP/OT/PT with CEUs. Mail check payable to Autism Society WNY Chapter and mail to 19 Limestone Drive\, Suite 1\, Williamsville NY 14221 Mail in registration accepted until Friday October 13 at  early registration rates.\nOR On line registration/brochures at friendsofasi link below  . On line registration available until Thursday at noon at no additional charge. Walk ins welcome. $10 additional charge.  We should have enough handouts for walk-ins.   See you there!
