In addition to the defining features\, as many as 50% of children with ASD exhibit behavioral problems\, including tantrums\, noncompliance\, and aggression. These behaviors interfere with the performance of daily living skills\, limit the child’s ability to benefit from educational services\, and may increase social isolation. Uncertainty on how to manage these behavioral problems may also amplify caregiver stress. The recognized struggles parents face in raising a child with ASD have sparked increased interest in evidence-based parent training (PT) programs\, as they empower parents to be the agent of change for their child. The Research Unit on Behavioral Interventions (RUBI) Autism Network developed a manualized parent training program that utilizes techniques grounded in Applied Behavior Analysis to teach families of children with ASD how to manage their child’s behavioral problems. We conducted a series of studies on the RUBI program and found that it is acceptable to parents\, can be reliably delivered by trained therapists\, and reduces children’s noncompliant and disruptive behavior. This training will provide an overview of the development and empirical investigation of the RUBI Parent Training program as a novel treatment for disruptive behavior in ASD as well as an in-depth walk-through of content for the Core RUBI sessions. Through the use of manual materials and case exemplars\, the training will focus on various treatment models\, delivery strategies\, and challenges\, including considerations when choosing cases\, discussion of common “pitfalls” when implementing session materials\, and how to promote successful delivery of the intervention in order to meet the needs of individual children and their families. \n\n\n\n\nLearner objectives: \n\n\n\n\nUpon completion of this training\, participants will be able to: \n\nDiscuss the rationale for parent training (PT) as a front-line treatment for children with ASD\nCompare the various types of parent training for youth with ASD\, including research findings\nList four key concepts that form the overarching framework of the RUBI program\nExplain the content of the Core RUBI sessions using illustrative case examples and including successful homework strategies corresponding to each session\nDesign RUBI assessment and treatment plans that are responsive to clinic demands and family needs\, including common barriers to treatment fidelity\n\nREGISTER \n\n\nAbout ASHA CEU Credits\, Certificates of Attendance\, and In-Service Credits \n\n\n\n\nEarn up to 0.5 ASHA CEUs or 5 contact hours per day for a total possible 1.5 CE or 15 contact hours for the entire Summer Training Institute. \n\n\n\n\nRequirements for ASHA CEU Credits\nParticipants can receive a maximum of 0.5 ASHA CE Credits each day for a total of 1.5 CE Credits for all three days. There are three blocks of content time: 10:00 am-12:00pm (ET)\, 12:45pm – 2:15pm (ET)\, and 2:30 pm- 4:00 pm (ET). Credit for ASHA CEUs will only be awarded to participants who are logged in for at least 80% of each day during the presentation times. There is no partial credit awarded for ASHA CEU Credits for less than one day. \nYou must submit a request for ASHA CE Credits for each day you attend. The link to submit your CE Credit request will be provided at the end of each day. \n\n\n\n\nPlease note the amount of Intermediate Level CEUs offered for each day below: \n\n\n\n\nJune 14: 0.5 ASHA CEUs\, 5 hours of instruction for in-service points\nJune 15: 0.5 ASHA CEUs\, 5 hours of instruction for in-service points\nJune 16: 0.5 ASHA CEUs\, 5 hours of instruction for in-service points \n\n\n\n\nCertificate of Attendance and In-Service Points\nCertificates of attendance will reflect the total amount of time participants are logged in each day. Please be aware that you can earn a maximum of 5 contact hours. Your certificate may show more than 5 hours since there is a lunch break and an afternoon break. The break times do not count towards ASHA CE Credit or In-Service Points. \nIf you are an educator\, you need to check with your professional development office to find out the documentation you need to get in-service points from your agency or district. \nFor information or assistance\, please email autism@med.fsu.edu.
